The virtual demonstrator will be selected during the duration of the project in collaboration with the Research Triangle Park, one of the oldest and largest research parks in the world, located in North Carolina near the mid-point of the U.S. East Coast .

The United States are very dependent on fossil fuel and oil in particular. To mitigate the increasing price of energy, local research groups are pursuing the development of smart grid technologies.

Island grids are of significant importance in the US as many villages or farm are isolated and thus either not connected to the national grid or suffering high energy transmission losses. To mitigate those effects, participating to a project such as Renaissance is a valuable opportunity. This would allow to lower the cost of energy, get a more reliable electricity and limit the fossil fuel dependency.
